My Divine Discontent
In the series My Divine Discontent, I use a bullwhip as a mark-making tool. Via the
act of striking a blank piece of paper proportioned according to the Golden Ratio, I explore themes of artistic futility as well as directly confront my anxiety of facing a blank rectangle. By approaching the paper with something of a weapon, I feel empowered and my discomfort with it subsides. Expelling a range of motions onto its surface, the paper becomes a repository for my offences and a document that criminalizes me at the same time as it liberates. This series, requires my full physical and mental awareness as I must not only intuit when it is a good time to stop the activity, but also receive strikes on my right arm and body when the whip snaps back upon hitting the surface of the paper. In the case of rewhipping a piece several times, I am also required to be on alert for safety pins flying open upon contact with the whip. To compensate for this damaging activity, I puzzle the broken pieces back together with safety pins and the final works evolve into evidence of my experiences.
